Technician advises homeowner to 'use sealant' -- only after ugly patches appear on wall

White patches that look like mould started appearing on STOMPer Derrick's walls just 3 months after repainting. A technician who inspected the problem told him the walls should have been treated with a sealant before repainting.

The STOMPer thinks that such an important instruction should have been properly communicated to consumers before use, instead of after the damage is done.

The STOMPer shares his frustration:

"When we repainted our house recently, we were utterly disappointed with what was to follow.

"All was well in the beginning until about three months later, the walls in one of the rooms started developing white patches that looks like mould.

"Eventually all the walls that were painted in the same colour had mouldy patches all over. Now the house looks unsightly.

"We called up the paint company up and they sent one of their salesman.

"After reviewing the walls with a gadget, the salesman said that there was no humidity on the walls, so the white patches formed were probably due to the content of the cement used in the HDB walls.

"I was unconvinced with his explanation, so he arranged another appointment for his technicians to do a more thorough check.

"This time he came with two technicians and after round of checks, the technician said:

'All paints are like that. This is a very common issue, except that you don’t realise it when using light colours because the white patches are not so visible. But they become very obvious if you use a dark-coloured paint. It happens in other brands as well. Furthermore, a sealer is a must before painting your walls.'

"I think his explanation is truly ridiculous.

"If a sealer is required before we paint the walls, why weren't such important instructions printed on the tins or communicated to consumers?

"I feel that it’s my responsibility to warn others, so that people will not fall into the same predicament as I did. I hereby also urged others who had the same encounters to step forward and share their experiences."
